non - HKU summer intern story
Updated: Oct 27, 2022
Greetings everyone! I’m Luis Chan, a junior majoring in Biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. It was an immense pleasure joining Dr. Joshua Ho’s Bioinformatics Lab at HKU’s School of Biomedical Sciences and the Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health Limited (D24H) at Hong Kong Science Park this summer. My research involved developing a new statistical method to evaluate whether a machine learning system can generate reliable predictions in different situations. This challenging topic in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is critical to making AI trustworthy for real-world medical applications. Throughout the last two months, I learnt new skills in computer coding, data science and machine learning. I wrote my own R code and carried out computational experiments. This internship has broadened my horizons in Bioinformatics and AI, and equipped me with indispensable programming skills that are useful in this big data era. Ultimately, I hope to learn more and contribute to our world at a molecular and digital level as a scientist.
